Troops of Assam Rifles on August 18 recovered cigarettes and other illegally transported commercial goods worth Rs 72 lakh at Thoubal district in Manipur.

An Assam Rifles official said: “Based on a specific input about movement of some illegal items at Yairipok, troops established a mobile vehicle check post along the Yairipok – Hongbi road. The team intercepted four Maruti Gypsy suspicious of carrying illegal items.”

“On search of the vehicles, 34500 packets of WIN cigarettes, 1000 packets of Esse Light cigarettes, other items including 11 boxes of mosquito repellent, four boxes of tinned fish and six Mikko mosquito repellent were recovered. Four individuals carrying the consignment were apprehended,” he added.

The apprehended individuals were identified as Benjamin, Ningthar Somi and Amzad.

The assessed commercial value of the seized contraband items is Rs 72 lakh.

The individuals along with the seized items were handed over to Customs and Excise department, Pallel for further legal action.
