Life in major parts of Sikkim and northern West Bengal’s Kalimpong district have been affected as they are cut off from the rest of the country following a series of landslides on the highway, triggered by heavy rainfall for the past few days, officials said on September 23.

Besides falling boulders and uprooting trees on NH 10, a portion of metal surface swept away at Kalijhora leading to road block between Gangtok and Kalimpong, official sources added.

There had been no report of any casualty so far, even as some houses in remote eastern Himalayas nearly flattened by the mudslides following downpour last night.

The NH 10 is lifeline of Sikkim and Kalimpong.

Latest reports said that series of landslides at several places like Sevok Kalimandir, Kalijhora, 29th Mile on the highway forced the authorities to suspend all traffic between Gangtok-Siliguri and Kalimpong-Siliguri routes and some parts towards Jalpaiguri district via Coronation Bridge.

Reports of landslides also came from Darjeeling and Mirik and streams and rivulets were overflowing following incessant rains.

Kurseong also reported heavy rains and road remained closed due to landslide at Sourini.
