The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the chief secretary of Assam to pay compensation of Rs 1 lakh to Shaukat Ali, who was allegedly tortured by miscreants in the presence of police personnel in Biswanath Chariali last year.

The NHRC has asked the chief secretary to pay the compensation by October 24.

It further directed the DGP Assam to apprise it within four weeks of action taken against the police officials involved in the incident and warned of invoking appropriate laws if this directive is ignored.

The NHRC referred to lack of desired response from the Assam government and the Assam Police in connection with the case.

The order was passed on the basis of a complaint lodged on April 12 by Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, regarding the alleged torture of Ali on April 7, 2019.
