Tripura government on September 18 started a two-day special ‘mask enforcement drive’ across the state in order to contain the spread of COVID-19.

The government has made wearing of masks compulsory while handing out penalties to those who were not wearing the protective gear in public places.

Chief secretary Manoj Kumar in a notification stated that the government is observing mask enforcement days on September 18-19. Apart from awareness for wearing mask, police will enforce the provision of Tripura Epidemic Disease COVID-19 Regulations, 2020 intensively in these days.

All the district magistrates have constituted several enforcement teams under their jurisdiction along with armed police personnel. Enforcement against non-wearing of mask have begun since morning in different markets, roads and localities across the state to ensure that no one should come out from home with mask or face cover, Kumar said.

“Besides, penalties on the offenders and other legal actions, the enforcement team would also educate the people about the necessity of mask at this stage and proper use of face mask. Most of the people use mask as a show but not cover the face and nose properly. The experts observed that improper use of mask and not maintaining physical distance in public places has caused the surge of COVID-19 cases in Tripura,” he stated.
