Youths of Assam who had to leave their jobs in Maharashtra in the wake of COVID-19 outbreak in March this year, have started to go back to re-join their work. The factories in Maharashtra have gradually started to reopen following the lifting of the lockdown.
As per information availed from Assam Bhawan in Mumbai, around 60 per cent of the youths have returned to the state in the last several weeks.
Joint resident commissioner of Assam Bhawan in Mumbai, Debashis Sharma was quoted as saying by the Assam Tribune that persons working in the construction sector, factories, including ice factories and as security guards among others, have returned.
“However, those working in beauty parlours and hotels are yet to return as those are yet to become fully operational,” Sharma added. The actual number of youths who have returned is yet to be ascertained.
He said that during the lockdown, five trainloads of people had returned to Assam from Mumbai and each train was carrying around 1,300 persons, while some had made their own arrangements to return home.
As almost all the factories are facing shortage of workers to reopen, some even provided air fare to the workers to return from Assam. He also pointed out that no one from Assam holding a white-collared job returned home during the lockdown.
The cancer patients who have been receiving treatments in Mumbai have also returned to resume their treatment. He added that the 150-bed Assam Bhawan which became fully operational from September 1 is now fully occupied with cancer patients and their attendants.
The Arogya Bhawans of Deepsikha Foundation, which can accommodate 200 persons, are also full.
