Researcher from Sikkim, Smriti Gurung, who is working in South Korea, collected and donated 2,000 COVID testing kits worth around Rs 40 lakh for her home state of Sikkim.

A PhD studies in biomedical science, Smriti Gurung, hails from Lower Arithang in Sikkim. She procured the kits from biotech firm Seegene in South Korea and dispatched them to Sikkim.

“Seegene is one of the country’s (South Korea) finest biotech firms which make testing kits to detect novel coronavirus. More than 30 countries across the world use the company’s kits. During my research work I came to know the regional manager of the company. I got an opportunity to get 2,000 testing kits,” the young researcher was quoted as saying by Sikkim Express.

“After getting the testing kits, I thought of sending it to Sikkim for the benefit of our people. The 2,000 COVID testing kits worth around Rs 40 lakh were dispatched on October 8 to Sikkim with help of the distributors in India,” Smriti added.

The kits reached Gangtok on October 13.

Smriti had successfully completed her PhD in biomedical science under Kyungpook National University, School of Medicine at Daegu in South Korea in August. She is currently posted as a post-doctoral researcher in the same university.
