Representative Image: Assam's border with Bangladesh near Dhubri

Assam government has decided to enhance vigil along the interstate borders to prevent fresh encroachments. Media reports hinted that drones will also be used in the forest covered areas along the interstate borders.

Quoting government sources, The Assam Tribune reported that around 589 square kilometres of Assam’s land is under encroachment by the neighbouring states.

“Assam government is committed to protect its constitutional boundaries and that is why, efforts are on to improve vigil along the inter-state border areas. However, because of the length of the inter-state borders and difficult terrain, it is not easy to deploy police to guard every inch of the border with the people of neighbouring states taking advantage of the situation,” a source was quoted as saying.

‘Fresh encroachment attempts along interstate borders easier to deal’

Fresh encroachment attempts are easier to deal with, but it is ‘very difficult’ to carry out eviction drive in encroachments that have taken place long time back, as per the source.

The report further mentioned about Assam government’s decision to increase the number of border outposts in the vulnerable stretches.

Meanwhile, the Union home ministry is keeping a close watch on the recent Assam-Mizoram border clash.

Assam shares international boundaries with Bhutan and Bangladesh, while interstate borders with Arunachal Pradesh on the north, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh on the east and Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram on the south.
