Bridge collapse in Manipur

A man died when a bailey bridge over Irang river at Taobam village in Tamenglong district of Manipur collapsed on November 1.

A truck coming towards Imphal fell down as the weak bridge broke killing one person and trapping some others who were in the truck.

The Imphal-Jiribam highway now remains cut off.

People from nearby areas rushed to the spot and pulled out the people who were travelling in the truck.

It was not known how many people were in the truck but it was feared that a person could still be missing.

Recently due to landslide, the Imphal-Mao highway was also cut-off and movement of light vehicles have only started.

Both the national highways connecting Manipur to the outside world were prone to frequent disturbances due to geographical conditions and weak bridges.

Earlier Border Roads Organization was looking after the highway but the works were taken over by NHIDCL.
