Almost after 11 months, Tripura government on November 17 appointed 1987-batch IPS cadre VS Yadav as director general of police (DGP).

The DGP post was lying vacant from January 1 this year after incumbent head of police AK Shukla retired from the service.

Accordingly, UPSC had recommended a panel of two Tripura cadre IPS keeping VS Yadav in the top of the list and his junior 1988-batch IPS Amitabha Ranjan.

The state government had favoured Ranjan for the top post who has been serving as Additional Director of Intelligence Bureau under Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). But he refused to join and MHA also didn’t agree to release him.

As per norms, Yadav was supposed to be appointed as DGP but chief minister refused to appoint Yadav and he was posted at civil secretariat as principal secretary of OBC Welfare breaking all traditions that hostile the situation.

Tripura government moved SC

Meanwhile, the state government had moved Supreme Court seeking relaxation of service length from 30 years to 25 years. The apex court accepted the state’s plea and directed UPSC to recommend a fresh panel for police chief of Tripura.

A month ago, UPSC recommended another panel of three officers listing VS Yadav at the top.

The in-charge DGP, 1993-batch Rajib Singh was also included in the list. But the state administration was not favouring chief minister to put junior cadre at the top post of police.
