34 Assam Rifles, Aina Battalion organizes weapon display for students

In its bid to motivate the local youth to join the Indian Army, 34 Assam Rifles organized a weapons display for students of remotely located Parbung and Senvawn villages along the ManipurMizoram border on the occasion of Vijay Diwas on December 16.

During the event, the students were informed about the significance of Vijay Diwas and were motivated to join the Indian armed forces with the help of informative and motivational videos.

The event was attended by around 70 students, teachers and local administration including SDO and staff of Tipaimukh sub-division.

The event was followed by refreshments and an interactive session between the students and Assam Rifles personnel.

Assam Rifles: Oldest paramilitary force of India

The Assam Rifles is the oldest paramilitary force of India. The unit can trace its lineage back to a paramilitary police force that was formed under the British in 1835 called Cachar Levy. Since then it has undergone a number of name changes — the Assam Frontier Police (1883), the Assam Military Police (1891) and Eastern Bengal and Assam Military Police (1913), before finally becoming the Assam Rifles in 1917.

Over the course of its history, the paramilitary force and its predecessor units have served in a number of roles, conflicts and theatres including World War I where they served in Europe and the Middle East, and World War II where they served mainly in Burma. In the post-World War II period the paramilitary force has expanded greatly as has its role. There are currently 46 battalions of the paramilitary force with a sanctioned strength of 63,747 personnel.
