Bajali becomes Assam's 34th district

In election-bound Assam, Bajali has become the 34th full-fledged district of the state. The new district was carved out of Barpeta district.

The inauguration ceremony of the new district was held on February 10. Bajali is located around 103 km west of Guwahati.

Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal tweeted: “Today is a great day for the people of Bajali subdivision as formal notification declaring it as a district has been issued. I congratulate the people on this occasion. I believe this will pave way for faster development of the educational and cultural hub of Assam.”

Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on February 10 formally inaugurated the newly-constituted district at a programme held at Bajali Higher Secondary School playground and also laid the foundation stone of Bajali Milk Processing Unit to be set up at Pathsala for a total amount of Rs 4.68 crore under Chief Minister’s Samagra Gramya Unnayan Yojna.

Speaking on the occasion, Sonowal congratulated the people for the 34th district of Assam and urged them to commit towards making the new district one of the best districts in the state. He also said that responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for Atmanirbhar India, state government has taken steps for making Assam self-reliant and he called on the local people to spearhead this movement with human resource as students here always perform well in every examination and excel in academics.

Minister of industry and commerce Chandra Mohan Patowary, during his speech, said that the struggle of Bajali residents for a district became successful under the able leadership of chief minister Sonowal and he said the present state government has been making consistent efforts to equally develop upper and lower Assam regions with steps like setting up of multi modal logistic park at Jogighopa among others.

Bajali, an erstwhile subdivision of Barpeta district, was formally declared as a district on January 12 by Assam governor Jagdish Mukhi.
