Popular Assamese actor Zerifa Wahid on March 15 joined the newly-floated Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) ahead of the assembly elections in Assam.

The actor-turned-politician joined the regional party in presence of AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi.

Months after joining the farmer leader Akhil Gogoi-led Raijor Dal, Zerifa Wahid quit the party and joined the AJP. Reports said that Zerifa Wahid switched sides after she was denied ticket for the polls by the Raijor Dal.

Zerifa had actively participated in the anti-CAA protests and later announced her foray into politics in October 2020 when she joined the newly-formed Raijor Dal.

Reports said that the actor was interested in contesting from Bhabanipur assembly constituency. Raijor Dal has nominated Akhil Gogoi’s old-time close aide Kamal Kumar Medhi for the upcoming polls.

While the Assam Jatiya Parishad forged an alliance with the Raijor Dal for the assembly elections, insiders said that several differences have reportedly cropped up between the two parties.
