CM Khandu visits Vijaynagar by ‘road’; photos go viral

Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu on March 27 shared photographs of his recent trip to Vijaynagar in Changlang district of the state which is yet to be connected by a motorable road. CM Khandu visited Vijaynagar in eastern Arunachal along the India-Myanmar border on vehicle and foot.

He became the first chief minister of the state to reach the remote administrative circle by road. Photographs shared by the chief minister, showed him driving a Mahindra Thar through the muddy terrain.

“A memorable journey from Miao to Vijaynagar (157km) on vehicle and foot,” chief minister Pema Khandu tweeted along with details of the journey.

Khandu, accompanied by UD minister Kamlung Mossang, RWD minister Honchun Ngandam, other officials and their security personnel, started the journey at 5 am on March 25 from Deban, in Namdapha National Park. He and his team reached Gandhigram (137km) on the same day and stayed there for onward journey to Vijaynagar the next day.

Attending a public meeting at Gandhigram and Vijaynagar, the CM said he undertook the journey from Miao to Vijaynagar to personally inspect the condition of road and to ensure that the construction to make it motorable is completed by March 2022. He said the accompanying officials from the RWD department will submit a complete report on the status of the road following the inspection. He said since the road falls in the Namdapha National Park area, the entire stretch of road cannot be blacktopped, but will be done wherever possible.

He said once the road reaches Vijaynagar, all forms of development will accompany it bringing in improved livelihoods. He said since the road being constructed by the RWD department requires to be well-maintained after its completion the task will be handed over to the Border Roads Organization (BRO).

The CM said the Namdapha region is a biodiversity hotspots area and with improved road conditions, it will give a big boost to tourism. He appealed to the local community of Yobin to enforce a ban on hunting so that the region’s pristine biodiversity is preserved. He suggested that the Yobin Welfare Society (YWS) impose fine on anyone found engaged in hunting.

One of the remotest administrative circles in Arunachal Pradesh, Vijaynagar is yet to be connected through an all-weather road. It is near the India-Myanmar border in eastern Arunachal. It is situated 157 km southeast of nearest town Miao and is surrounded by dense forests. One can travel to the administrative circle only through a foot march which takes around six-seven days, or through helicopter service from Mohanbari in Dibrugarh.

On August 1, 2020, the place was connected through 2G telecom services by state-owned BSNL.
