Elections to the 30-member Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) in Meghalaya has been postponed from April 9 to April 12 in view of the Assam assembly elections.

The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma on March 4 night.

Sangma said the polling date has been postponed to April 12 due to the third phase of the assembly elections which is slated to be held on April 6 in western Assam.

“Since the constituencies during that phase is closer to Garo Hills region, keeping that in mind the polling to the GHADC which was supposed to be on April 9 needed to be postponed so that the logistics which includes security, manpower transportation all these aspects need to be look into,” the Meghalaya chief minister said.

He also informed that counting of votes for GHADC polls has also been postponed to April 15 to ensure smooth conduct of the elections.
