Locals in Majuli are celebrating as Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has chosen to contest the 2021 assembly elections from the constituency once again.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on March 5 announced the first list of candidates in New Delhi.

“It is a great news for all of us. We are happy that CM Sarbananda Sonowal will contest from Majuli for the second time. He has done a lot for the island… we have witnessed major developments in the last five years. I am sure he will win once again so that we can see more development,” said Lalit Bora, a retired school teacher in Majuli.

Though Sonowal hails from Dibrugarh, he decided to contest from Majuli in 2016 and received more than 50 per cent votes to defeat his rival candidate from Congress.

Even the youth have expressed their willingness to see the CM winning from Majuli once again with a big margin.

“We must say that after the BJP government came to power, we have seen better roads and better facilities. We feel proud that our constituency is represented by none other than our chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal. We were sure that he will continue to contest from Majuli. We are happy as the official announcement came,” said Ankur Baruah, a college student.

BJP will contest 91 seats while its allies AGP will contest 26 seats in the state assembly elections. United People’s Party Liberal will contest eight and Rabha Jatiya Aikya Manch one.

Among others, state finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will contest from his Jalukbari constituency.
