Local media quoting the government officials have said that several Myanmar nationals have fled to India and taking shelter in the adjoining Mizoram.

At least 12 people have fled from Myanmar recently after the Military coup in the country and are taking shelter in Mizoram, The Mizoram Post reported.

The locals claim that there are some policemen included among these who fled. Authorities in India, however, not yet confirmed that claim.

The administration in Mizoram said that the refugees have not carried any documents which could ascertain their identities.

Eight people have entered Serchhip district while four others reached Champhai district in the bordering areas, said Serchhip Deputy Commissioner Kumar Abhishek.

The Myanmar nationals are now lodged at local community halls.

With the unrest in the neighbouring country, many in Mizoram had appealed to the state government for political asylum. However, there has been no such request from the other side.

“So far, none has applied to us seeking political sanctuary or political asylum. If at all there is a request, we will make a decision. It has to be ratified by the Centre since the issue concerns two countries,” Mizoram Home Minister Lalchamliana was quoted as saying by The Hindu.

Local organisations have expressed their concern that in the coming days more Myanmar nationals might end up entering Mizoram.

“If the people of Myanmar have to flee the military, Mizoram will welcome them with open arms, give them food and shelter. We would even approach the central government to grant us permission in the event of refugees’ influx,” Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga had said recently.

India shares a 1,643-km land border with Myanmar.
