Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on March 27 said that the people of the state are voting for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies as his government has worked for development of all sections of the society.

After casting his vote in Dibrugarh in the first phase of polling on March 27, Sonowal, who is contesting from Majuli, said that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) will not affect them.

“We have worked for the people of Assam in the last five years. People are satisfied with us. We followed ‘Sabka saath, sabka vikaas, sabka vishwas’,” Sonowal said.

“We are going to win. BJP and its allies are the ones working on the ground. People of Assam now know that CAA-NRC will not affect them,” he added. Sonowal offered prayers at Boga Baba Mazaar at Dibrugarh before casting his vote.

Later in the day, Sonowal addressed a rally at Barhampur and said that development is the key issue this election and his government has brought back Assam to the development path. “Earlier, the Congress governments at the Centre and in the state did nothing for Assam. People had to pay bribes to get jobs. Citizens could not benefit from the schemes because of corruption and middlemen. Since our government came to power, we removed those middlemen and now benefits are directly transferred to the citizens. We provided a corruption-free government,” CM Sarbananda Sonowal said.

Addressing the tea tribes, Sonowal said that the recent visit of Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to a tea garden in Assam was just a photo-op for social media. “She stayed at the tea garden for two minutes to click some photos. What was she doing when her government was in Assam and the Centre? We increased the daily wages of the tea garden workers and we promise to further increase the same,” Sonowal said in broken ‘Bagania’ dialect.

The Barhampur constituency was represented by Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) founder and former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta since 1991. This time, AGP left the prestigious seat for its senior ally BJP who fielded Jitu Goswami as its candidate. Mahanta later announced that he will not contest the assembly elections.
