Eighty-five people died of COVID-19 in Assam in the past 24 hours, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed on May 11. The state recorded 6,258 fresh cases in the last 24 hours.

Chief minister Sarma informed that of the 68,572 tests done in the past 24 hours, 9.13 per cent came out positive for the viral infection.

In Kamrup Metro district, as many as 1,585 fresh cases were detected on May 11.

A day earlier on May 10, Assam reported 77 deaths due to COVID-19.

“Held a meeting with ministers & senior officers today to assess the #COVID situation in Assam and need to intensify containment measures. In wake of escalating numbers, directed officers to ensure strict enforcement of restrictions to bring down positivity rate,” Sarma tweeted on May 11.

Earlier, newly-appointed health minister Keshab Mahanta said that the state government is not planning to announce a total lockdown immediately. “We are not planning to impose total lockdown as yet. We want to strictly enforce other measures before reaching such a decision,” he said on May 11.
