Sahitya Akademi awardee litterateur and veteran journalist Homen Borgohain passed away due to post COVID-19 complications in the morning hours on May 12.

He was 89.

Family sources said that Borgohain was admitted at a private hospital in the wee hours of May 12 and he breathed his last at around 6.58 am.

Borgohain returned home several days back after recovering from COVID-19.

He was also associated with several newspapers. The eminent author was acting as chief editor of Assamese daily Niyomiya Barta at the time of his death. Apart from that, he also worked with Amar Asom, Asom Bani, Nilachal, Sutradhar, Nagorik and Satsori, among others.

Homen Borgohain was awarded Sahitya Akademi Award in 1978 for Assamese language for his novel Pita Putra. Apart from that he was honoured with several prestigious awards. He was also the president of Asam Sahitya Sabha, the apex literary body of the state.

His literary works have been widely appreciated by the critics and readers.

Born in a small village in Lakhimpur in 1932, Homen Borgohain went on to become an Assam Civil Service officer before joining newspapers to pursue a career in journalism. And in between, he continued to create literary pieces.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and others have condoled the death of the prominent author.
