An animal attendant at Biological Park in Itanagar was mauled by a tigress on May 18 afternoon.

The incident occurred when 35-year-old Pouluch Karmakar, working as an animal attendant at the park, went inside the enclosure of a tigress for cleaning water pots.

Arunachal Pradesh environment and forest minister Mama Natung on May 19 visited the Biological Park in Itanagar and interacted with park officials, particularly with the animal attendants.

The minister observed that the incident could be of a case of negligence on the part of the deceased. However, he directed the PCCF and principal secretary (environment & forest) to constitute a five-member committee and submit a fact-finding report within a week for the appraisal of the Arunachal Pradesh government.

Meanwhile, curator of the park, Raya Flago informed that the tiger’s enclosure at the Itanagar Biological Park, where the unfortunate incident happened and Pouluch Karmakar lost his life in the line of duty, will be named after him as a mark of respect to the deceased.
