On the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5, the Assam government announced setting up of a department of climate change.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state government has taken the decision to tackle the threat posed by global warming.
“Our government has decided to formally set up Department of Climate Change to tackle the threat posed by climate change. This step will pave the way for Assam to emerge as a leader on climate change,” chief minister Sarma said.
The department will take steps for adaptation and mitigation of global warming besides attracting international funding from multilateral and bilateral institutions. Among other roles of the department will be to boost preparedness to handle the phenomenon and working on advanced warning systems.

It will also work on new technologies and futuristic models for development in power, urban development, renewable energy, agriculture, water resources and allied sectors.
