The opposition MLAs belonging to the Congress, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) on July 12 staged a walk-out from the Assam assembly on the first day of budget session in protest against price rise of petrol, diesel and other commodities.

The opposition MLAs moved an adjournment motion and demanded the speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, Biswajit Daimary to hold a discussion over skyrocketing price rise of petrol, diesel and other commodities, but the speaker had rejected the opposition’s demand.

In protest against rejection of their demands, the opposition MLAs, led by Congress and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), staged a walk-out from the assembly.

AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam said that, the opposition MLAs had moved an adjournment motion and demanded the speaker to hold a discussion over price rise, but the speaker rejected the opposition’s demand.

“An Assam minister and the speaker said that, this is a matter under the central government and they can’t allow to discuss the issue. The speaker had rejected our demands and in protest against it, we had staged a walk-out from the assembly,” Aminul Islam said.

Lone Independent MLA, Akhil Gogoi, said that, he had also supported the opposition’s demand to hold a discussion over price rise issue.

On the other hand, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on July 12 tabled the Assam Cattle Preservation Bill 2021 in the assembly for discussions.
