Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on July 17 symbolically set afire illegal drugs worth crores at programmes organized by the Assam Police in Golaghat and Diphu to dispose-off seized drugs.

In the programmes, various illegal drugs weighing more than thousand kilograms were destroyed.

Speaking at Golaghat, chief minister Sarma said: “If we want to make a prosperous Assam, we have to make a disease-free state. At one point of time, though the state was used as a transit route for drug paddling, subsequently the state has emerged as a point of drug business.”

In response to the surging trade of drugs, the Assam Police in its operation against drugs has seized drugs worth Rs 170 crore in the last two months. Sarma said that immediately after coming to power, he directed the police to act against drug trafficking to make a drugs-free state.

As a part of the operation, Assam Police already arrested 1,493 people allegedly indulged in the drug business. He also said that police have been given full freedom to act against the menace of drug trafficking in accordance with the rule of law.

Hailing the police personnel in their spirited operation against drugs, CM Sarma said that the state no longer remains a safe passage for the drug traffickers.

He also said that the flames of the drugs consigned would send across a positive message throughout the state for a drugs-free state.

DGP Assam Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, speaking on the occasion, reiterated Assam Police’s commitment to make a drugs-free state.

Finance minister Ajanta Neog, agriculture minister Atul Bora, health and family welfare minister and guardian minister of Golaghat Keshab Mahanta, irrigation minister Ashok Singhal, revenue and disaster management minister Jogen Mohan, MLA Dibrugarh Prasanta Phukan, MLA Dergaon Bhabendra Nath Bharali, MLA Sarupathar Biswajit Phukan and a host of other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
