Assam government has imposed total lockdown in seven districts for seven days to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Health minister Keshab Mahanta on July 6 said that Goalpara, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Morigaon and Lakhimpur districts will be under total curfew for seven days. The total containment measures will be applicable from July 7 onwards.

“The decision was taken after analysing the data we gathered in the last 10 days. If everyone follows the protocols, we expect to control the spread of the viral infection soon,” Mahanta said addressing a press conference in Guwahati.

“We are analysing why cases are increasing in these seven districts. Interestingly, rural areas are reporting most of the cases as compared to urban areas in these seven districts. Also, tea gardens are reporting a good number of positive cases. We are screening the cases with rapid testing,” the minister said.

Essential shops like medical store and grocery shops in the containment districts will remain open, but people are advised to remain indoors as curfew will remain in force throughout the day, the Assam health minister said.

Tea garden works will continue in these seven districts although they will have to follow COVID-19 protocols strictly.

As many as 11 districts in Assam, including Kamrup Metro, will have relaxed timings for curfew. Shops will be allowed to remain open till 4 pm in Dhubri, Kamrup Metro, South Salmara, Majuli, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Udalguri, West Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao, Charaideo and Hailakandi districts. The curfew timing in these districts will be from 5 pm.

Inter district travel in Assam remains banned until further notice. Schools/colleges will remain closed.
