With Assam government planning to implement a two-child policy in the state soon, Assam state Jamiat Ulama said that they will not support the process if implemented forcefully.

Jamiat’s Assam unit secretary Maulana Fazlul Karim Qasimi said that they will support the move of the state government if it is “done in an encouraging manner”.

“Islam also wants population growth to be controlled. We will support the government’s policy if it will be (done in) an encouraging manner,” Qasimi told India Today TV in an interview.

“We will support the government’s population policy. But it should be in an encouraging manner, not forcefully,” Qasimi added.

On June 20, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said that his government would strictly follow two-child norms to select the beneficiaries in all government welfare schemes.

He said the state government will gradually implement two-child norms for availing benefits under the government schemes.

Qasimi further said that they will not support “separate laws for different religions and communities”.

“One community should obey the policy; another one has been exempted. We can’t support this type of policy,” Qasimi added.

“Birth control policies cannot be imposed upon minorities. Population policy should be applicable to the majority. There should be a law on birth control for the majority,” the Jamiat’s Assam unit secretary said.

On July 4, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma interacted with the representatives of indigenous Muslim communities and discussed on several topics including birth control which was “welcomed” by all.
