Tripura MLA Brishaketu Debbarma

A day after IPFT legislator Brishaketu Debbarma tendered his resignation from the Tripura Legislative Assembly, speaker Rebati Mohan Das on June 30 said that he will not accept the resignation until verified in person.

First time legislator, Brishaketu, a popular young tribal leader, was elected for the first time on an Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) ticket from CPI-M stronghold Simna in 2018. On June 29, he had sent his resignation to the speaker citing personal reasons, which came out as a serious setback for the ruling BJP-IPFT government.

The speaker said Brishaketu Debbarma had sent his resignation letter through a messenger and did not meet the speaker personally, which was against the legislative practice. “I have not accepted his resignation as the legislative practice was not followed and also forwarded the copy to his party president and the chief minister, which is also against the procedure,” speaker Rebati Mohan Das said.

“I have to ascertain the genuinity of the resignation as Brishaketu himself did not come to tender it. Once I get confirmation personally from Brishaketu after he appears physically, I will accept this. Brishaketu might have been forced to tender the resignation; who knows?” the speaker added.
