Seven under trial prisoners escaped from jail in Pasighat in East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh, police said on July 12.

Media reports suggested that the undertrial inmates used chilli powder and salt to attack the prison guards.

There were 94 prisoners in the Pasighat jail.

“Seven of the prisoners suddenly attacked the guards by throwing chilli and pepper powder and salt on their eyes,” inspector general of police (law & order) Chukhu Apa was quoted as saying by Arunachal Times.

“The incident took place in between 6.30 to 7 pm on Sunday. Prima facie it appears the inmates scuffle with the jail staffs. Seven of them managed to escape from the jail,” Arunachal Pradesh Police (APP) PRO Rohit Rajbir Singh told UNI.

He, however, said except seven, other inmates who attempted to escape, were overpowered by the jail staff.

The police spokesman informed that an inquiry is being conducted by East Siang SP over the incident.

“We have got some leads and working on it. Massive search operation has been launched to nab them,” Singh said.

The Arunachal Times reported that five guards suffered injuries in the attack, and one of them, who was possibly hit with the heavy lock of the cell, was badly injured on the head. His mobile phone was also snatched away by the UTPs who escaped.
