Union home minister Amit Shah on July 25 said that the NDA government under the leadership of prime minister Narendra Modi has given a special focus for development of the Northeast region.

He said that prime minister’s 35 visits to the region in last seven years and induction of five ministers in the Union cabinet from the region is a clear indication of the Union government’s commitment for growth of the Northeast region.

Amit Shah was speaking on the occasion where he handed financial assistance to 100 selected beneficiaries of COVID-affected families under ‘Prarthana’ scheme of Assam government in Guwahati.

He also ceremonially laid the foundation stone of 430 bedded Tamulpur Medical College and Hospital at the programme.

Further saying that under the leadership of prime minister Narendra Modi, the Bodoland Agreement was signed, the home minister stated that the government has already delivered 90 per cent of conditions of the agreement.

Reiterating the Union government’s commitment for protecting and preserving Assam’s language, its heritage, and culture, Amit Shah said that the language, dialects, cuisines, and cultural traditions of Assam and Northeast are India’s jewels and the government would preserve these.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked the minister for his visit to Assam to launch the state government’s initiatives on the healthcare sector. He said that under the leadership and guidance of prime minister Modi and Amit Shah a new chapter for lasting peace in the state dawned with the signing of BTR Accord.

Under the ‘Prarthana scheme’, Rs 1 lakh will be provided to 5,114 beneficiaries whose family members have deceased due to COVID-19.

Earlier, giving a boost to Assam and Northeast’s cancer treatment infrastructure, the Union home minister inaugurated the Radio Therapy Block of State Cancer Institute at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and also dedicated the newly installed linear accelerator machine at the centre to the service of the people.
