Three accused arrested for killing egrets in Tangla

Three persons accused of killing scores of egrets at Tangla in Udalguri district of Assam, were arrested and sent to jail on July 1.

Following submission of complaint case by DFO, Dhansiri Forest Division, Naba Kumar Bordoloi, who was entrusted with the responsibility to investigate the killing of egrets at Tangla, the three accused were arrested and sent to jail on July 1.

Three accused – Shantanu Das, CEO, Udalguri Town and country planning and EO, Tangla Municipal Board; Sadanda Sahari, JE, Tangla Municipal Board and Milton Sangma, driver – were booked under Section 55 of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and were produced at the CJM Court, Udalguri and sent to jail.

More than 200 egrets died due to “wilful destruction” of nests by way of felling of bamboo grooves that were providing shelter to the birds with fledglings in Ward No 1 and No 2 in Tangla town of Udalguri district on June 24.

Additional PCCF wildlife and chief wildlife warden, MK Yadava had appointed DFO Bordoloi as inquiry officer under the provision of Section 50(8) of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 for investigating into the death of species of birds scheduled under the said Act on June 25.

Yadava asked the inquiry officer to ensure filing of a complaint case against the culprits in appropriate court of law under Section 55 of Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 on completion of investigation.

Yadava asked Bordoloi to submit his investigation report as per law within seven days.
