All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) has condemned the ‘unilateral act’ of Assam officials in allegedly destroying standing crops in a village inside Arunachal territory and termed it as an act of threat to the peace-loving people of the state.

AAPSU also demanded the state government to register its protest at the highest level.

A team of Assam forest department officials and police personnel reportedly carried out an eviction drive at Lora-1 village under Belo-Lora Panchayat of Kimin in Papum Pare district on July 30 destroying standing crops, including tea plantation and rice cultivation.

The AAPSU on August 1 held an emergency meeting in Itanagar in connection with the emerging border issue vis-a-vis Assam and other neighbouring states in the aftermath of the Assam-Mizoram imbroglio and the recent incidents of Assam Police and forest officials destroying standing crops, tea plantation and rice cultivation in Lora village of Kimin and Longkhojan village in Kanubari circle of Longding district.

The union also took note of repeated alleged illegalities committed by Assam Police and forest officials in various villages under the Kangku circle of Lower Siang district.

“The deafening silence and meek stand adopted by the state government is sending out a wrong message and instead emboldening its counterpart in carrying out such atrocities to the inter-state boundary dwellers,” claimed the AAPSU leadership.

Terming as “unfortunate” the last-minute cancellation of the high-powered ministerial committee meeting on the border issue, AAPSU said: “When there are already talks of resolving the border issue between Arunachal Pradesh and Assam at the highest level, such incidents defeat the very purpose of conflict resolution.”

In view of recent border issues cropping up among Assam and other Northeast states, the apex students’ body called for strict adherence to status-quo in the boundary matter, as ordered by the Supreme Court, for maintaining peace and tranquillity, saying “border issues can be resolved only through talks”.

The union said it will visit both the eastern and western border areas of the state in the coming days to ascertain the “ground realities” and the problems faced by the people living on the inter-state border.

While supplementing the stand taken by NESO, the AAPSU urged the central government to immediately intervene in the Assam-Mizoram border row and also call upon for lifting of ‘economic blockade’ against Mizoram by various individuals and organisations.
