Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Tripura

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman arrived at Agartala on August 27, on a two-day visit to Tripura. Sitharaman is scheduled to inaugurate a number of new projects in the state.

This is her first visit to Tripura since the alliance of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) came to power in the state in March 2018.

On August 27, Sitharaman inaugurated the scheme for 80,000 functional tap connections along with 132 drinking water supply schemes at Mohanpur HS School under Jal Jeevan Mission. She was accompanied by Tripura chief minister Biplab Deb during the programme.

Police sources said that security arrangements have already been tightened. The officer-in-charge of Killa police station has informed that a programme is being organised at Dasharath Deb English Medium School ground in Killa where a production unit of sanitary pads will be inaugurated by the finance minister.

A total of 10 SHG members from different local SHGs will meet Sitharaman in the programme. A total of 1200 people may attend this inauguration programme from the local areas of Killa, reports said.

An official at NABARD said that the production unit of sanitary pad is being implemented by Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM) with the support of NABARD. This unit has completed trial run and the sanitary pads are being sold by the SHG members in the local market for the last few months.

Local police said that Sitharaman is expected to visit Tripureswari temple in Udaipur. The temple is popular for Goddess Tripureswari or Goddess Tripura Sundari.
