The banned United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) has extended its unilateral ceasefire by another three months.
This is for the second time that the outfit has extended the ceasefire. It had announced a unilateral ceasefire for three months on May 15 due to the COVID pandemic, and later it was extended by another three months on August 14.
In a statement, ULFA-I chief Paresh Barua said the decision to extend the ceasefire by three more months has been taken in the interest of the people of Assam and the outfit will desist from all kinds of military action during the ceasefire.
Notably, the parleys for peace talks with the centre have been going on for the last several years.
In a recent visit to Delhi, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had sought permission from Union home minister Amit Shah in this regard. After the meeting, Sarma said that the Union home minister had “authorised” him to hold talks directly with the outlawed ULFA (Independent) chief Paresh Baruah.
Sarma also admitted that his government had some communication with elusive ULFA-I chief Baruah through a third party since he took charge of the administration.
