Angry mob vandalises house of murder suspect in Manipur’s Thoubal district

An angry mob burnt down the house of alleged murderers of a 21-year-old girl in Manipur’s Thoubal district on December 28.

Korimayum Nargish, daughter of Korimayum Ahamad Ali of Lillong Haoreibi Makha Leikai who went missing since December 22 night, was found dead in a suspicious manner on December 27. Her body, tied to a tree, was recovered from the bank of Imphal River in Lilong Haoreibi Makha Leikai Konjil on December 27 morning.

Police investigating the case arrested three persons including a woman in connection with the case late on December 27 night. The arrested persons were Chesham Sirajur Rahman (27), son of Sirah Ahmad, his younger sister Chesam Mastara (23) and Chesham Musha (21) of Lilong Haoreibi Makha Leikai Konjil under Lilong police station.

A team of Lilong police station, where a case regarding the death of the girl was lodged, arrested the trio from their house on December 27 around midnight, the police said.

When the news of the arrest of the alleged culprits spread, people stormed their house and ransacked it before setting afire the belongings of the house. Police who rushed to the spot, however, controlled the mob from burning down.

As tension is running high, armed police personnel have been detailed in and around the house.

Meanwhile, Thoubal district superintendent of police, S Ibomcha Singh on December 28 claimed that the three arrested persons have confessed that they murdered the girl.

“During interrogation, they admitted commission of the crime,” he told reporters at a press conference. The police officer then assured of taking up all necessary legal procedures to punish them and deliver justice to the victim girl and her family while making an appeal to the people not to indulge in mob violence.
