NorthEast United midfielder Federico Gallego has left India after he was ruled out for the Indian Super League season due to a knee injury. Gallego had undergone a successful surgery and is recovering.

The Uruguayan suffered an injury during the first half of the Highlanders’ clash with Chennaiyin FC on November 29.

Giving an update on his injury, fan-favourite Federico Gallego wrote on Facebook: “Successful surgery and already thought about rehabilitation to get up once more, fight again, and go back to looking to be the best version of me, which will undoubtedly happen.”

“Thank you very much Gerardo and the entire medical team for the professionalism and great human quality with which you have dealt with me,” he added.

The Uruguayan also thanked his teammates and support for taking care of him during the “most painful moments”. “Thanks to my teammates for the support, @shahashadmuhammed15 my brother for everything, Hernan and Datmary for putting up with me in the hardest and most painful moments and always being there to accompany me, I will never forget it,” he wrote.

Gallego added a thank you note for the fans who were shocked at the star playmaker’s injury.

Earlier, before leaving India, Gallego said that it was “more difficult to say goodbyes because it was not at the end of the season as it should have been”.

“Grateful to all of you, several years shared with some and a lot of times shared in this bubble life. Joy in good times and support in difficult ones. I will miss you a lot since you have been like a family in this time, I wish you all the best for what is coming and I have no doubts, how I told you, being you all together, you will overcome all the adversities that appear. Thank you for your support and hopefully one day football will cross us again,” he wrote.

It was unclear if the NEUFC star will play for the Highlanders in the next season.
