West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee visited the iconic Kamakhya temple in Guwahati to offer her prayers to Goddess Kamakhya on December 21.
The Trinamool Congress supremo reached the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati around noon and directly headed to the Kamakhya temple situated at Nilachal Hills. Banerjee was received at the airport by Trinamool Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev.
“It’s completely a private visit. She will visit the temple to offer puja and will head back to Kolkata in the evening,” a senior Trinamool Congress leader from Assam said on December 20.
This was Mamata’s first visit to any state of Northeast India, after her party made inroads in Meghalaya and Assam poaching senior Congress leaders.
Notably, 11 Congress legislators led by the former Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma had recently joined the Trinamool Congress.
