The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), an umbrella body of major students’ association in the region, will observe December 11 as a “black day” at several places across the Northeast states to mark its continued opposition against the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019.

In a statement issued on December 10, NESO chairperson Samuel Jyrwa said despite the relentless opposition of the indigenous people of the Northeast against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, it was passed by the parliament.

“NESO has declared that December 11 will always be remembered as a Black Day for the whole of the Northeast. In continuation with this, NESO has decided that there will be a display of black flags and black banners in all major places across all the seven states,” Jyrwa said.

Jyrwa added that this observation is to give a message to the government that the people in the region are against this Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019. At the same time, it will remind the people of the region about yet another political injustice that the government perpetrated against the indigenous people of the Northeast, he said.

The NESO chief also called upon all the people of the Northeast to support the day and at the same time “to keep on fighting for the cause which is our God given right.”
