A villager was shot dead by suspected militants in Assam’s Cachar district along Assam-Manipur border on January 10 evening, police said on January 11.

According to the police, the incident took place at Namdailong Rongmei Punj village area under Jirighat police station in Cachar district of Assam.

Cachar district superintendent of police Ramandeep Kaur said that, suspected Naga militants fired upon a villager and he died on spot.

“The deceased person was also a former militant,” Ramandeep Kaur said.

The deceased person was identified as 37-year-old David Rongmei.

According to the FIR lodged by family members of the deceased person, on January 10 evening three persons by covering their face with black cloths and equipped with weapons came to the house of David and dragged him out from his house and shot him in front of his family members.

David Rongmei died on spot.

Following the incident, a team of Cachar district police on January 11 visited the area and launched operation to nab the attackers with the help of Manipur police.
