Assam on January 10 reported 2198 fresh cases of COVID-19 as the third wave of the pandemic tightens its grip across India.

Of the 48,964 tests done during the past 24 hours, 4.49% came out positive – the highest in past several months.

Kamrup Metro district, which mainly comprises the main city of Guwahati, on January 10 reported as many as 760 fresh cases of COVID-19.

Dibrugarh reported 142 cases while Cachar in southern Assam reported 139 cases. Tinsukia district detected 115 cases of the viral infection in the past 24 hours.

With this, the total number of active cases increased to 6,867 even as 416 patients were released from the COVID care facilities and quarantine during the day.

Two patients, one each in Cachar and Kamrup Metro, succumbed to COVID-19 related complications on January 10.

There has been a rapid surge in number of COVID-19 cases in the state as Omicron variant of the viral infection has tightened its grip.

In the last 10 days, Kamrup Metro reported 3395 cases while nearby Kamrup district reported 569 cases. Jorhat district in eastern Assam reported 459 cases while Cachar reported 379 cases.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said that the third wave of the pandemic began in the since January 1 and it is expected to peak by the end of the month.

Among other measures, the state government has started providing precautionary dose (booster dose) of COVID-19 vaccine to healthcare workers, frontline workers and senior citizens (on prescription).

Till January 10, 7921 booster shots were given to those eligible.
