Northeast states have a poor representation of women in the police department. As per a parliamentary standing committee report out of 71,608 police personnel in Assam, just 5,434 are women in civil, district armed reserve, special armed and IRB.

This constitutes a mere 7.59 percent. In other northeast states, the situation is no better.

Tripura with 5.13 percent is the lowest while Nagaland with 9.74 percent of women representation in the police which is the highest in the Northeast.

Manipur comes second with 9.10 percent and Arunachal Pradesh is the next with 8.66 percent. Sikkim has 8.07 percent, women, in its police force while 7.18 percent is in Mizoram.

In Meghalaya, 5.77 percent are women.

According to the directives of the union home ministry, the women representative should be at least 33 percent in all the states and union territories.

The parliamentary committee on home affairs opines that the police force without adequate representation of women cannot be treated as truly modernised or reformed.

The committee, however, observed that the role of women in the police has been steadily increasing.

The committee headed by Congress MP in the Rajya Sabha Anand Sharma said in its report that the police are required to deal with varied situations of public order involving women, which also necessitates their representation in police forces.
