Offering a hope for a dignified livelihood, a tea stall run by transgenders was inaugurated at the Kamrup district deputy commissioner’s office premises in Assam on April 18.
The tea stall, a one-of-its-kind initiative involving the district administration and the transgender community, has been set up at the DC’s office complex in Amingaon, Guwahati.
The ‘Trans tea stall’ has been set up under the aegis of the All Assam Transgender Association in collaboration with the district administration to “empower the transgender community of the state and to help them learn entrepreneurial skills”.
Speaking to the media, founder of All Assam Transgender Association, Swati Bidhan Baruah said that the tea stall will go a long way in making the transgender community, who often face discrimination and harassment, believe in development initiatives.
“This is a small beginning for empowerment of the transgender community. We want to provide livelihood support to transgenders who often face discrimination and harassment while looking for options to earn their livelihoods,” Baruah told the media.
“Besides providing a source of earning and living with dignity to the transgender community, this initiative will also send a strong message to the society,” Baruah added.
