Street vendors in Imphal protested on April 19 when they were evicted from selling things after 8 am.

Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) caretaker mayor, L Lokeshwor had, on April 18, announced that street vendors of the Imphal market will not be allowed after 8 am.

Following the announcement, Imphal Police on April 19 evicted the street vendors after 8 am. While evicting them, the police informed that they will be allowed to do business at a temporary market shed in Lamphel Super Market. However, the street vendors protested against the move of IMC and demanded a proper vending place nearby the city market while citing the space provided by the IMC is not suited for business.

A strong city police team led by its OC rushed to the spot and talked to the vendors not to resort to any violence agitation.

Meanwhile, Imphal Municipal Corporation caretaker mayor L Lokeshwor along with officials of the corporation arrived there and held talks with the street vendors.

The caretaker mayor tried to convince the street vendors saying that the restriction to the street vendors is being imposed as a move to check traffic congestion on the streets around the Khwairamband Keithel.

Informing that IMC is arranging a vending place for the street vendors at Lamphel Super Market, he asked the street vendors to go there and sell their things if they wanted.

On the other hand, the street vendors did not accept the vending space being arranged at the Lamphel Super Market, alleging the space is not suited for vending.
