Office bearers of ASJA addressing a press conference in Guwahati on April 29

Sports journalism will step into its 100th year of existence in Assam on July 1 in 2022.

To mark the occasion, the Assam Sports Journalists Association (ASJA), the apex sports journalists’ organisation in the state, has decided to have a year-long celebration starting on July 2 this year, which will also mark the world sports journalists day.

The ASJA in its executive meeting held on April 25, 2022, in Guwahati decided to celebrate the historic occasion as the sports news publication’s centenary year from July 2 of 2022 to July 1 of 2023.

It was on July 1 of 1923 that the first-ever sports news was published in the newspaper named ‘Asomiya’. It marked a new era of news publication in Assam and sports news has since been published in all the print, electronic and digital media published and telecast from Assam.

It’s a milestone in Assam’s sports journalism.

ASJA president Subodh Malla Barua and secretary Imtiaz Ahmed have appealed to the Assam government’s departments of sports as well as the directorate of information and public relation, Assam Olympic Association, various state and district sports associations to cooperate in celebrating the historic centenary year celebrations.

Marking the yearlong celebrations, the association has planned to organise several events in different parts of the State. Apart from undertaking welfare schemes for sports journalists, the association has planned to organise some lectures, sports film festivals, sports photography exhibitions and competitions, interactions with sports personalities and others. The association will publish a book on the history of sports and sports journalism during the yearlong celebrations.

The opening and concluding ceremonies of the centenary year will be marked with the felicitation of sports journalists.
