612 dead in Assam floods in last 7 years

A total of 612 persons lost their lives in the floods in Assam in the last seven years. As per records of the Assam government, of 612, 64 in 2016, 160 in 2017, 45 in 2018, 101 in 2019, 124 in 2020 and 8 in 2021 lost lives due to floods in the state.

So far, a total of 134 persons have died in flood in Assam this year.

The highest number of death was recorded in Assam’s Morigaon district, where 85 were killed in flood between 2016 and 2021. The second highest is Barpeta district with 48 deaths, followed by Dhemaji with 38 deaths during the floods that occurred between 2016 and 2021.

Twenty-five deaths were reported from each Goalpara and Lakhimpur districts.

According to government records, as many as 9 lakh hectares of agricultural land have been damaged by floods in these years. Of which 2.80 lakh hectares, 0.31 lakh hectares, 2 lakh hectares, 2.67 lakh hectares, and 0.67 lakh hectares of agricultural land were damaged in floods in the year 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21 respectively.

Altogether 80,346.28 hectares of agricultural land have been damaged by floods this year.
