In order to mark the celebration of world day against child labour and to ensure the elimination of child labour from society, the ‘elimination of child labour week’ has been started in the Kamrup Metro district on June 12 with a rally in Guwahati.
The elimination of child labour week is being organised by the office of the assistant labour commissioner of Kamrup Metro in collaboration with the district level task force on child labour, Kamrup Metro, world vision and Bachpan Bachao Andolan under the theme ‘universal social protection to end child labour’ and it will continue till June 20.
Speaking on the occasion, secretary of district legal services authority Chaturjya Prasad Talukdar stressed on the need to create proper awareness among the society about the legal provisions available for the elimination of child labour.
He said that most people in society are unaware of the fact that engaging children as domestic help or for any work is an offence. He also stressed the need for collaborated support of all stakeholders including government departments to labour department for the end of child labour.
Assistant labour commissioner of Kamrup Metro Kanpai Das said that awareness is very less among different sections of the society despite various government initiatives and programmes to eradicate child labour are being taken, which resulted in the prevalence of child labour.
He hoped that the celebration of the elimination of child labour week will help in increasing awareness among the mass.
