‘Local Utpaat’ has become only the 5th Assamese film to enter the Rs 1 crore box office club. A remarkable feat, considering that Assam has only 50-odd screens, this milestone was achieved on the 3rd Sunday of the film’s release.

Expressing his happiness, director Kenny Deori Basumatary said: “I had never thought we would achieve such huge success. We’re extremely grateful to the people of Assam for the love they have showered on the film.”

All the money doesn’t go to the producers, though. After GST, hall share, distributor share etc, around 35-40% of the box office comes to the producer.

“I’ll be able to pay my cast and crew what they deserve, and also return the money I borrowed for the film’s release. But most importantly, we won’t have to ask anyone for money to make the next film, and I can make it freely without any interference from anyone,” Kenny added.

Local Utpaat‘ started out in 51 screens and made it to the third week in 27 screens, highly significant for an Assamese film. Even the Bangalore show did very well, with the weekend shows being almost houseful.

‘Local Utpaat’ distributor Sukanta Paul is trying to get shows in Delhi, Noida, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune and Hyderabad from June 3rd or June 10th.

The team is also planning to take the film through projector screenings to towns in Assam where there are no cinema halls.

Asked about what he plans next, Kenny said that the next thing audiences will see is a comedy web series called ‘Ki Kowa, Dosti’ on regional OTT platform Reeldrama. After that comes the post-production of ‘Jiya’, a film about a single mother, written, produced and starring Sarmistha Chakravorty. “Most likely, we will shoot ‘Local Kung Fu 3’ in winter this year and release it in winter 2023,” said Kenny.

“We hope the public will support us then also as they’ve done during ‘Local Utpaat’,” he added.
