The Meghalaya government on June 16 announced that all schools in the state will remain closed from June 17 to June 20 due to heavy rains and floods.

A notification issued by commissioner and secretary in-charge education, BDR Tiwari said that this is in view of the inclement weather and warning by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) MET Centre Shillong on heavy to very heavy rain with isolated extremely heavy rainfall which is very likely to continue over Meghalaya during next 5 days.

The respective deputy commissioners are advised to assess and examine on a case-to-case basis, on the safety for reopening of schools in their respective districts.

“This notification is issued in the interest of the safety of school children and shall come into force with immediate effect till further order,” it added.
