Police recover over 5000 kg dry cannabis from truck in Tripura

Tripura Police on June 17 seized a huge consignment of contraband from a 10-wheeler LPG truck at Mungiakami in Atharamura foothills on Assam-Agartala national highway. Two persons – one each from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh – were arrested.

Acting on a tip-off Khowai police intercepted the truck and recovered 5364 kg dry cannabis worth Rs 8.46 crore concealed in the gas chamber.

Police arrested the driver Habib Answari, a resident of Bihar and co-driver Sunil Kumar hailing from Uttar Pradesh.

In the initial investigation it was revealed that the consignment was loaded at Jirania in the eastern part of Agartala and the consignment was heading for Manipur, from where it could be smuggled to Myanmar.

“We are interrogating the driver and his assistant to dig out details of the case. It is still premature to divulge the link of this consignment and sender’s details,” SP Bhanupada Chakraborty said.
