Three held with 1.073 kg of brown sugar in Manipur

Police in Manipur’s Jiribam district on June 12 arrested three alleged drug paddlers, including one from Assam, with 1.073 kg of brown sugar.

The seized drug would be valued over Rs 85 lakhs in the local market and over Rs 10 crore in the international market, police said.

According to police, arrested persons were identified as Sevanshon Sevan Raja (30) of Kangpokpi district, Sevan Raja Athoi of the same district and Debashish Paul of Assam’s Cachar.

Jiribam superintendent of police, Ksh Ravikumar Singh said that they were arrested on June 12 when the contraband drugs were recovered from a car they were travelling in.

A team of Jiribam district police on routine frisking and checking of vehicles plying along NH-37 at Leingangpokpi village stopped a car coming from Imphal side towards Jiribam.

Upon checking the vehicle, the police personnel found 1.073 kg of suspected brown sugar in the car. The value of the drugs would be over Rs 85 lakh in the local market, the police officer added.

The apprehended individuals along with the recovered item were handed over to Jiribam police station for taking further necessary legal action, the police officer further added.
