An IndiGo jet lost control and skidded off the runway at Jorhat airport in Assam, reports said on July 29.
According to a statement released by the airline on July 29, a flight that was scheduled to depart from Jorhat in Assam and go to Kolkata had to be cancelled because the airplane went off the runway when it was taking off and got a pair of its wheels trapped in the muddy outfield.
According to the airline, the incident occurred on July 28 when the aircraft, which had a total of 98 people on board, was taxing out in preparation for take-off.
“IndiGo flight 6E-757, operating from Jorhat to Kolkata, returned back to bay during departure. While taxiing out, the pilot was advised that one of the main wheels had partially run over the grass adjacent to the taxiway. The pilot held the taxi procedure as a precaution and asked for necessary inspection,” it added.
“The aircraft was taken back to the bay at Jorhat for inspection. During the initial inspection, no abnormalities were observed. As a matter of caution the maintenance team initiated a thorough inspection. The flight was cancelled,” the IndiGo statement said.
After being delayed in Jorhat for a number of hours due to a “technical problem”, the IndiGo aircraft that was scheduled to depart for Kolkata was eventually cancelled. Officials said that “there were 98 people on board the aircraft. All passengers deboarded and are safe. They waited inside the terminal building until the flight was cancelled around 8:15 pm”.
