Meghalaya police has declared a ‘war against drugs’ in the state and it will be fully committed to eradicate the menace, a top police officer said on June 30.

After the arrest of six persons along with 676 grams worth Rs 1 crore seized from East Jaintia Hills and East Khasi Hills district on June 30, DGP LR Bishnoi said that the state police has declared a ‘war against drugs’.

“Our war against drugs will continue and Meghalaya police is fully committed to eradicating this menace of drug abuse from the state. Our operation on all sensitive routes will continue unabated till this problem is eradicated from the state,” Bishnoi told reporters.

Garry Kharnaior (30) of Mawlai Bus stand and Kmenlang Shabong (20) of Mawlai Mawdatbaki were arrested at around 3:50 am at Khliehriat, East Jaintia Hills on June 30.

From their possession, two bags containing heroin in 60 soap cases wrapped in black polythene and 30 strips of Nitrasepam tablets were recovered.

Furthermore, on preliminary examination, the arrested persons revealed that one person by the name of Marvin Jyrwa was the main financier of the entire illegal contraband and that he was waiting to receive the illegal contraband at Mawryngkneng, according to police.

Accordingly, a team was sent to Mawryngkneng and they intercepted and detained Marvin Jyrwa along with three associates namely Meibifil Buam (22) of Mawlai Umsaw, Khrawboklang Kharkongor (29) of Mawlai Kyntonmasar, Aiborlang Laitmon (28) of Mawlai Nongpathaw.

The DGP said that a case under NDPS Act has been registered and an investigation is ongoing.

Urging the people to join the ‘war’ waged by the Meghalaya Police against the menace of drug abuse, Bishnoi said: “I appeal to all sections of the society to come forward and share any inputs on drug abuse to police, we will maintain the confidentiality, their names will never figure out and ensure prompt and immediate inputs.”

The Meghalaya DGP also felicitated additional SP Banraplang Jyrwa and 35 other police personnel who were part of the joint operation that led to the arrest of the drug suppliers. All were presented with the DGP’s commendation certificates.

“The operation will continue. As a matter of policy, we have decided that whoever will do good work from the police or the intelligence branch, they will be instantly rewarded,” he said.

Meanwhile, the DGP has announced the decision of the state police to come up with a mobile app to improve the collection of intelligence inputs, within the next 10-15 days.

“We will launch this app in July and after that, we are expecting that we will get many intelligence inputs from the public as well,” he said.
